Error F8 means that the built-in meat probe has failed to work. The meat probe is an electrical instrument that tests meat as it is cooking to check its temperature. The temperature usually displays on the Profile's liquid crystal display (LCD) screen. If the meat probe fails, however, the profile displays error code F8 instead. This error usually indicates an electrical problem that interferes with the meat probe's ability to function.
Display of ErrorBesides displaying the code F8, the GE Profile also beeps eight times to inform you that it is displaying code F8. Sometimes this code appears because of a general electrical short instead of a problem with the meat probe; unplug your oven and plug it back in to see if that clears the display. If it doesn't, the error refers to a failure of the meat probe.
What to DoIf unplugging your oven and plugging it back in is insufficient to clear the error code, turn the oven off. When the oven has cooled, remove any food from it. Reach inside the oven, unplug the meat probe from the oven's interior wall and remove it from the oven. Check if any wires are twisted or pinched on the outside of the probe; fix them if they are. Lay the probe on a flat surface for two to three hours and let it cool. Plug it back into the oven and see if it works. If the error code comes up again, the meat probe is defective.
ConsiderationsIt may be difficult to get a replacement meat probe for a 1994 model oven. If the oven works properly except for the meat probe, you can unplug the meat probe and take it out. Use an external meat thermometer to help you determine when meat is done. Alternatively, if your GE Profile oven has several problems, it may be time to replace the oven.
